  • National Youth Training Project

    I just spent the last 2 weeks at the Flying Fruit Fly Circus in Albury, I attended the NYTP (National Youth Training Project). This brought together over 40 people aged between 12-26 to spend 6 hours a day training in Circus Arts with some of the best trainers from all over the world.  This included ex-Cirque Du Soleil performers and trainers, trainers from the Shanghai Circus school, and some of our home grown tallent. My goal for the 2 weeks was to do solid training in Handstands and Tumbling.  However during my first class of handstands my shoulder gave out.  I had previously injured it when on a trapeze training with Cirque Du Soleil.  So I spent the rest of that day with the first aid officer trying to be able to return to training. I returned the next day, but I had to drop my handstand and tumbling classes.  This left me with one hour of uni-cycling, one hour of clowning, and three hours of juggling/manipulations.  After two days of this I dropped uni-cycling, as I fell of and landed heavily on my shoulder. So it was down to one hour of clowning, and four hours of juggling.  Trying not to get RSI I did many manipulations, I leant how to spin a meteor, I did club swinging and passing, balls and rings.  i did some staff just for fun when I was tired. We got Sunday off and had a break to relax. Monday morning I got out of bed and felt all tight and sore.  I sat on the couch, leaned my head to the right while scratching my neck.  I hear a horrid snap..!  I am in instant pain, I have to use my hands to hold my head up.  It hurts so bad, I dont know what to do.  I lay on the floor to stabalise my neck, there is no position that sits well.  Thepain is constant and so sharp.  I just bare with it.  The pain eases slightly, or I just get numbed to it. I call physiotharapists and osteopaths for urgent appointments. I have done this once before, but I was in year six, and there was no snap.  I get into the osteopath for that morning.  I drive over in severe pain. The osteo puts me through some range of movements and tried to feel what I had done to myself.  She adds to my pain, but in a good healing way. I spent the following four days with heat packs and deep heat on my neck.  I was in so much pain that I double dosed on very strong pain killers and anti-inflamitories.  The pain killers didn't numb the pain enough, it still hurt so much that all I wanted to do was cry. On the Thursday I returned to the osteo, she again added to my pain in that healing way.  My range of movment had increased dramatically and the pain reduced enough for me walk around comfortably, and now able to drive again. I woke up on Friday able to pick up a club and do some more club swinging, but I had to be carefull.  I was pain free until late afternoon, when the grab came back. So I didn't realy get to do much at the NYTP, but I met lots of awesome people and learnt something about how minor injuries can become serious, fast.  Plus I got to talk to alot of trainers and observe their training techniques from the sideline. Now I must heal, so no more circus for a while.  .live.com&GT1=neokitten">.spaces
